Hazmat shipping 5 Step guide:
STEP 1 - Identification of Hazardous Materials
The materials being shipped has to be identified whether it is considered to be hazardous.
STEP 2 -Hazmat Packaging
All Hazmat material must be properly packaged.
There are three hazmat packing groups.
-Group I Packing indicates that danger of this hazmat chemical is high..
-Group Packing III indicates the least amount of danger but is still considered a hazmat material.
-For general packaging requirements refer to Section 178 of CFR 49.
General Hazmat Materials Classifications:
-Hazard Class 1: Explosives
-Hazard Class 2: Compressed Gases
-Hazard Class 3: Flammable Liquids
-Hazard Class 4: Flammable Solids
-Hazard Class 5: Oxidizers and Organic Peroxides
-Hazard Class 6: Toxic Materials
-Hazard Class 7: Radioactive Material
-Hazard Class 8: Corrosive Material
-Hazard Class 9: Miscellaneous
STEP 3 - Labeling
Hazmat materials need to be properly labeled for shipping. These labels cannot be hand made and have to be purchased from a label company that is compliant with the US Department of Transportation.
Each shipment must have a label that indicates the type of hazard category it contains.
Here are the hazard categories:
-1.1 - EXPLOSIVES 1.1
-1.2 - EXPLOSIVES 1.2
-1.3 - EXPLOSIVES 1.3
-1.4 - EXPLOSIVES 1.4
-1.5 - EXPLOSIVES 1.5
-1.6 - EXPLOSIVES 1.6
-2.1 - FLAMMABLE GAS
-2.2 - NONFLAMMABLE GAS
-2.3 - POISON GAS
-3 - FLAMMABLE LIQUID
-4.1 - FLAMMABLE SOLID
-4.2 - SPONTANEOUSLY COMBUSTIBLE
-4.3 - DANGEROUS WHEN WET
-5.1 - OXIDIZER
-5.2 - ORGANIC PEROXIDE
-6.1 - POISON INHALATION HAZARD
-6.1 - POISON
-6.2 - INFECTIOUS SUBSTANCE
-7 - RADIOACTIVE WHITE-I
-7 - RADIOACTIVE YELLOW-II
-7 - RADIOACTIVE YELLOW-III
-7 - EMPTY
-8 - CORROSIVE
-9 - CLASS 9
STEP 4 - Marking
Hazardous materials must include:
-Proper shipping name,
-UN number,
-Consignee's name and address,
-Consignor's name and address.
STEP 5 - Placarding
The shipper as well as the trucking company are both responsible for appropriate placards displayed on the truck.
STEP 6 - Shipping Papers
Every hazmat shipment must have proper shipping papers in case the carrier of your shipping has an accident and there is need for cleanup of the hazmat material.
Each shipment must contain paperwork (msds) that contains a 24-hour emergency telephone number that can be called in case of an accident.
All hazmat shipping materials must include these items on the paperwork (msds):
-What material is being shipped including the shipping name and UN number
-Who is shipping
-Where it is shipping to
-Your office, lab, and home phone numbers
-When shipment is scheduled to arrive,
-Proper MSDS sheets included.
